Join us for the premiere of Trace Figures as Margaret Jenkins and her dancer/collaborators – along with Paul Dresher, Joel Davel and their invented instruments – inhabit and transform the atmosphere of DZINE, a unique and wonderfully spacious furniture and art gallery on Utah Street in San Francisco.
Audiences will be led from one area to another, experiencing the performance and DZINE’s luxurious 15,000-square-foot space from a variety of vantage points. The evening will open with the dancers, musicians, and Dresher’s invented instruments stationed throughout DZINE as the performers interact with Paul, Joel, and the instruments. The work culminates with the audience surrounding the action while three of Dresher’s larger invented instruments become the source for Paul’s new composition for Trace Figures.
In its four-and-a-half decades of dancing around the world and throughout the Bay Area, Margaret Jenkins and the MJDC have performed in many unconventional spaces. This new work at DZINE will be the first designed especially for such a distinctive site, offering a special opportunity to interact with Paul Dresher and Daniel Schmidt’s invented musical instruments and sound sculptures in a unique way.
Dresher has long been interested in bridging the boundary between the musicians and dancers in performance. The movements required to play (or trigger) these remarkable instruments are, in fact, more akin to dance movements than the small motor dexterity required for traditional instruments. Jenkins, Dresher, and the dancers are all extremely excited by this collaboration and the opportunities and provocations presented by placing these invented instruments into DZINE to create this immersive evening of dance and live music.
Trace Figures is graciously funded by the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation and Sam Mazza Foundation, as well as ongoing support from The Bernard Osher Foundation, Dianne and Daniel Vapnek Fund, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Fleishhacker Foundation, Hellman Foundation, John Sanger Family Foundation, Judith Brown Meyers Fund, San Francisco Grants for the Arts, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and many generous individuals.
