Founded in 1973, the MJDC is a collaborative body of dancer/collaborators, writers, composers and visual designers, an ensemble that shifts and reconstitutes itself depending on the project. The MJDC and all its associates are dedicated to an art that awakens, provokes and encourages a deeper inquiry into oneself, that pushes the parameters of how art can be seen and interpreted, who experiences it, and the conversations that ensue. The dancer/collaborators and other artists work intimately with one another: a community of makers, to push themselves to find a unique physicality for each work and a singular visual and musical environment.

Throughout our history, the MJDC has been a place for innovation, collaboration, experimentation, and evolution of the artistic process. Because we believe in the transformative power of dance, we seek to create environments – in the studio and with our audiences – where everyone feels safe, provoked and challenged. Through making work for audiences around the world, as well as developing programs like CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange) and Encounters Over 60, we propose, encourage, and sustain a dialogue with all who collaborate and all who witness.
