Guangdong Modern Dance Company

Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) is mainland China’s first professional modern dance company. Internationally renowned for its exquisite and captivating performances, the company was founded in June 1992 under the auspices of the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province. Willy Tsao from Hong Kong was invited to be the first Artistic Director for the company. In 2007, Pun Siu Fai succeeded the artistic directorship of the company and Tsao took up the responsibility of Managing Director. GMDC is a company based in the fastest growing region of the fastest growing economy in the world. Its vision that modern dance is a tool for self-expression attracts some of the most talented dancers and choreographers in China. Works created by its dancers, resident choreographers, artistic directors and international guest artists have been staged at home and abroad winning critical acclaims and overwhelming audience responses. The company tours extensively and has appeared at the India International Dance Festival, the Singapore International Arts Festival, Korea’s Chang-Mu International Dance Festival, England’s Edinburgh Festival, Millennium Moves of Germany, Japan’s Tokyo Tiny Alice International Theatre Festival, Hong Kong Festival of Asian Arts, the Holland Dance Festival, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Venice, Festival Cina Vicina, Rome, Italy, the Aarhus International Arts Festival, Aarhus, Denmark, the Festival of China in Washington D.C. and Dance Salad, Houston, U.S.A. www.gdmdc.com.

Liu Qi
Deputy Artistic Director

Liu Qi graduated at the Beijing Dance Academy from the Ethnic Dance faculty in 1991 and worked as lecturer in the Academy thereafter. Liu joined the GMDC in 1996 and has since then served the company as dancer, teacher and artistic master. In 2004, she was appointed Deputy Artistic Director. In 2006, she was awarded Century Star by the Guangdong government for her outstanding achievements in the art. Liu has performed in major dance works, toured extensively with the company and has taken part in many international arts festival and dance festivals. She has also choreographed many award-winning works for the company. Her work Pagoda (1996) was awarded a Gold Medal for choreography at the 1997 Tao Li Cup, a Silver Medal at the 1998 Lotus Award, and Grand Prize at the 2000 Moscow International Arts Competition. Fight Under the Table (2001) was awarded a Silver Medal for choreography at the 2001 National Dance Competition, a Gold Medal for choreography at the 2002 Lotus Award. Upon Calligraphy (2005) was awarded for outstanding choreography, performance, lighting design and repertoire at the Guangdong Arts Festival 2005. It was featured in the China Festival at the Kennedy Centre, Washington D.C. and the Dance Salad Festival, Houston, TX. Other major works include: Opera Girl (1996), Hong Bo Qu (1998), Fight Under the Table (2001), and Between… (2004), Ambrosia (2006) and Forward-For-Forward (2007).

Hui Guanglei,
Dancer/Collaborator

Hui Guanglei was born in Liaoning where he received ballet training at the Fushun Music and Dance School . He then entered the National Ballet Academy in Russia where he graduated with an honour degree in 2000. He has won scholarship and second prize in classical ballet competition in Russia and later joined the National Ballet of Russia taking part in Don Quixote, Giselle, and Paris Flame etc. He joined the GMDC in 2005 and has since then performed in all major productions and tours. His works including: 1+1+1 and A Reality: Waiting is Romantic, and Earth 19th Floor.

Li Pianpian,
Dancer/Collaborator

Li Pianpian first studied at the Guangdong Dance School and later at the Beijing Dance Academy where she graduated in 2004 from the modern dance and choreography stream. She has choreographed and performed Thief, Pharynx and Supervision Space, which were received with high appraisals. Li worked as dance teacher at the Guangdong Artistic Occupation Academy before she joined the GMDC in 2007.

Liu Bingyuan,
Dancer/Collaborator

Liu Bingyuan (Dancer/Collaborator, GMDC) graduated from the Shenyang National Arts School in 2003 and entered the Liaoning Song and Dance Company as a dancer. The same year, she was awarded the first prize for Chinese Classical Dance Children Group A at the Liaoning Province Youth “Tao Li Cup” dance competition. In 2006, she was awarded first prize for Modern Dance Youth Group at the Liaoning Province “Tao Li Cup” dance competition. Later, she joined the Beijing Second Artillery Song and Dance Company. The production she took part in was awarded third prize at the CCTV dance competition. Liu joined the GMDC in 2007.

Lu Yahui,
Dancer/Collaborator

Lu Yahui was born in Hunan. She entered the Guangdong Dance School when she was fourteen years of age. After dancing three years for the Grand World Scenic Park Arts Troupe she joined the modern dance diploma course organized by the Sun Yat Sun University where she graduated in 2004. She joined the GMDC the same year and since then has toured extensively with the company. Her choreographed works include: A Piece of Chewing Gum, Join, This Place is Called…, Far Together, Close Apart.

Tan Yuanbo,
Dancer/Collaborator

Tan Yuanbo entered Guangdong Dance School Chinese Dance stream in 1995 and the Sun Yat Sun University Art and Management (dance choreography and performance stream) in 2001. He has danced for the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater while completing a B.A degree course at the National University of Defense Technology. He joined the GMDC in 2007.

Zhang Yinwen,
Dancer/Collaborator

Zhang Yinwen was trained in Chinese dance at the Chengdu Cultural and Arts School and later studied at the Central University for Nationalities ethnic dance stream. Already during his school years he was cast in many performances and won a gold medal and a bronze medal award at the “Tao Li Cup” dance competition. Zhang joined the GMDC in 2007. He is also a teacher of Chinese dance at the company’s training centre.
