In her 35-year career, Margaret Jenkins has created a body of work that is physically demanding, intellectually rigorous, and always imbued with interpretations about the human character. Other Suns is a trilogy of dances created by Jenkins and her Company in a cross-cultural collaboration with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company of Guangzhou, China and its deputy artistic director, Liu Qi. Created over the past two years in both the U.S. and China, the trilogy features music by composers Paul Dresher and Bun Ching-Lam, visual design by Alexander V. Nichols and costumes by Laura Hazlett and Vivi Zhang. Investigations of symmetry and asymmetry in both cultures reveal many balances and imbalances in our world— Other Suns examines that fragile place. With athleticism, technical acuity and nuance, the dancers from the MJDC and the GMDC create a highly charged landscape that transcends national and cultural borders.
